A scientist understands and knows about the natural world. They know how to ask and answer questions. They can solve problems by gathering information and testing out ideas. They use evidence to explain how the world works.

At Lawrence View Primary and Nursery School, we believe that science should spark curiosity, inspire wonder and help children make sense of the world around them. We are proud to have achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) Gilt Award, recognising our commitment to providing high-quality science education and ensuring that every pupil has an excellent experience of science throughout their primary years.

Our science curriculum is carefully designed to develop children's understanding of key scientific concepts whilst fostering a lifelong curiosity about the natural and physical world. We encourage pupils to ask questions, think critically and develop the knowledge and skills needed to investigate and answer those questions.Our knowledge based curriculum provides opportunity to use skills through enquiry.

Science helps pupils to:

Our curriculum is built upon a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, carefully sequenced so that children progressively build their understanding over time. Alongside this knowledge, pupils develop the essential skills of scientific enquiry, including observing, questioning, predicting, testing, recording, analysing and evaluating.

Through practical investigations and hands-on experiences, children learn to work scientifically, make observations, gather evidence and draw conclusions. We aim to develop confident, independent learners who can think like scientists and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.

Science also plays an important role in developing children's understanding of the wider world, helping them appreciate environmental issues, technological advances and the impact of science on everyday life. Wherever possible, we enrich learning through practical experiences, outdoor learning, visitors and wider curriculum links.
