Our English Curriculum
At Lawrence View Primary school we use the Literacy Tree as a basis for planning our English curriculum from Y2-Y6. Foundation, Year 1 and children who may need extra support take part in 'Drawing Club' which enables mark making to turn into sentences as they use their imagination from quality texts. Spelling is taught with the support of Spelling Shed.
The phonics approach used is Little Wandle (See our phonics section) and our reading programme for Keystage two once children are fluent is supported by Active learn.
As our children move through our school they can choose to read a rich, variety of different reading materials. Our children are exposed to a wide selection of classic and modern literature along with good quality non-fiction, as well as poetry. A wide selection of genres and reading material are always available in each classroom as well as in our various reading areas.
Children have the opportunity to take part in a weekly buddy reading system where the older children read with the younger children, this encourages reading for pleasure and gives the older ones responsibility. Teachers also read high quality text for story time daily and some time is built into the week for children to choose books that interest them in a cosy environment.
Our children are encouraged to read at home 5 times a week, and we ask parent/carers to make a record of this in their home/school diary. The children are rewarded with Dojos for 5 reads, they are also entered into a weekly raffle where they are presented in our celebration assembly with a book of their choice. We also give books out as prizes and Santa gives every child a book at Christmas. Children in foundation take a story sack home and all children can choose a reading for pleasure book to change weekly.
