Our English Curriculum

At Lawrence View Primary School, we use The Literacy Tree as the foundation for our high-quality texts and as a stimulus for planning our English curriculum from Year 2 to Year 6. These carefully selected texts inspire engaging writing opportunities and support the development of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills across the curriculum.

In Foundation Stage, Year 1, and for children who require additional support, we use Drawing Club and Curious Quest. These approaches encourage children to develop their imagination through high-quality texts and experiences, supporting the progression from mark-making to sentence writing and early composition skills.

Spelling is taught using Spelling Shed, which provides a structured and progressive approach to spelling development across the school.

Our phonics programme is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised (see our Phonics section for further information). Once children become fluent readers and move into Key Stage 2, their reading development is supported through Bug Club ActiveLearn, alongside high-quality whole-class reading opportunities.

As children progress through school, they are encouraged to read a rich variety of texts. They are exposed to a carefully curated selection of classic and contemporary fiction, high-quality non-fiction texts and poetry. Every classroom and reading area offers a diverse range of genres and reading materials to promote reading for pleasure and broaden children's experiences as readers.

Children take part in weekly buddy reading sessions, where older pupils read with younger children. These sessions foster a love of reading, build confidence and fluency, and provide opportunities for older pupils to develop responsibility and leadership skills. Teachers also share high-quality texts through daily story time, and dedicated time is built into the school week for children to select and enjoy books of their own choice in a welcoming and comfortable reading environment.

We strongly value the partnership between home and school in developing confident readers. Children are encouraged to read at home at least five times each week, and parents/carers are asked to record this in their home-school reading diary. To celebrate and promote reading, children receive Dojos for completing their weekly reads and are entered into a weekly raffle. Winners are presented with a book of their choice during our celebration assembly. Reading is further promoted through book prizes, special reading events and our Christmas tradition, where every child receives a book from Santa.

Children in Foundation Stage take home story sacks to share with their families, and all pupils have the opportunity to borrow a reading-for-pleasure book each week, helping to nurture a lifelong love of reading both in and out of school.
